![]() Arguably, clearer boundaries provided through definitional clarity would promote more coherent and efficacious education programmes. One of the benefits that definitional clarity offers entrepreneurship education is the establishment of discipline boundaries, demarcating what entrepreneurship is and, importantly, what it is not. Interestingly, however, there is a lack of continuity in the programmes that are offered across these institutions ( Bennett, 2006 Brush et al., 2003). The demand for entrepreneurship education has been increasing for the previous two decades ( AACSB, 2017 Charney and Libecap, 2003). Two broad domains in which this impact may be seen are education and research – however, given the scope of entrepreneurship, we acknowledge that the domains of impact are likely ubiquitous. The conjecture of Shane's (2012) remarks implies that a lack of clarity surrounding the definition of entrepreneurship has impacted on the advancement of the field in some respects. Instead of hashing it out, the field has largely adopted if the field is to advance, we need to do a better job of deciding on our definition of entrepreneurship” ( Shane, 2012, p. With an adequate night’s rest, the homeostatic drive for sleep is reduced, the circadian waking drive begins to increase, and the cycle starts over. However, this wake-promoting system begins to decline at bedtime, serving to enhance sleep consolidation as the need for sleep dissipates across the night ( Gillette and Abbott, 2005). Process C builds across the day, serving to counteract process S and promote wakefulness and alertness. Process C is wake promoting and is regulated by the circadian system. ![]() The need for sleep (process S) accumulates across the day, peaks just before bedtime at night and dissipates throughout the night. Process S is the homeostatic drive for sleep. The sleep-wake system is thought to be regulated by the interplay of two major processes, one that promotes sleep (process S) and one that maintains wakefulness (process C) ( Gillette and Abbott, 2005). Similarly, the arousal response to respiratory resistance (for example, resistance in breathing in or out) is lowest in stage 3 and stage 4 sleep ( Douglas, 2005). The hypoxic ventilatory response is also lower in NREM sleep than during wakefulness and decreases further during REM sleep. The cough reflex, which normally reacts to irritants in the airway, is suppressed during REM and NREM sleep. ![]() More generally, ventilation and respiratory flow show less effective adaptive responses dur ing sleep. Further, during REM sleep, there is reduced rib cage movement and increased upper airway resistance due to the loss of tone in the intercostals and upper airway muscles ( Parker and Dunbar, 2005). Several factors contribute to hypoventilation during NREM, and possibly REM, sleep such as reduced pharyngeal muscle tone ( Krieger, 2000 Simon et al., 2002). Ventilation data during REM sleep are somewhat unclear, but they suggest that hypoventilation (deficient ventilation of the lungs that results in reduction in the oxygen content or increase in the carbon dioxide content of the blood or both) occurs in a similar way as during NREM sleep ( NLM, 2006). Respiratory: Ventilation and respiratory flow change during sleep and become increasingly faster and more erratic, specifically during REM sleep ( Krieger, 2000 Simon et al., 2002). The chapter ends with a discussion about how sleep patterns change over an individual’s life span. Sleep and circadian-generating systems are also reviewed. This chapter provides an overview of basic sleep physiology and describes the characteristics of REM and NREM sleep. Although its function remains to be fully elucidated, sleep is a universal need of all higher life forms including humans, absence of which has serious physiological consequences. Humans spend about one-third of their lives asleep, yet most individuals know little about sleep. In addition, the sleep-wake system is thought to be regulated by the interplay of two major processes, one that promotes sleep and one that maintains wakefulness. Circadian rhythms, the daily rhythms in physiology and behavior, regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Each has unique characteristics including variations in brain wave patterns, eye movements, and muscle tone. NREM sleep is divided into stages 1, 2, 3, and 4, representing a continuum of relative depth. There are two types of sleep, non-rapid eye movement ( NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement ( REM) sleep. Humans spend about one-third of their lives asleep. ![]() CHAPTER SUMMARY This chapter provides a brief overview of sleep physiology and how sleep patterns change over an individual’s life span. They offer a snappy and secure experience for the user, and fewer variables to consider for the developer. PWAs enable cross-platform usability by running directly in the browser, without the need for store integration or plugin installation. It is a Minesweeper clone for every device that loads in a couple of seconds, even on 2G! A recent example is the Proxx game made by the Google Chrome team. Furthermore, massively popular sites, including Trivago’s hotel booking form application and social media giant Facebook’s pages, already run as PWAs. Several major players, such as Microsoft, provide resources for PWA development on their platforms. Progressive Web Applications (or PWAs for short) are further closing the gap between desktop and mobile. These “abandoned” applications may have to rely on the effort of different communities to preserve them beyond December this year. Notwithstanding this, there are still a lot of Flash-based applications out there that are not compatible with modern browsers. Under 5% of websites today run Flash, and the technology is almost as old as I am. ![]() However, VR Group has since released a mobile version of their booking service and will probably also update their desktop site in the near future. This led to a web architect, Tuomas Salo, creating a third party Flash-free Chrome extension for the web page. They still use Flash for their seat selection when booking tickets through their desktop page. A living example of this is the government-operated railroad company, VR Group, here in Finland. ![]() Migrating to a new technology can be a slow and tedious process. Perhaps the most notable criticism of Flash was in the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ memo on the topic in 2010, where he explained why Flash never officially made it onto iOS devices and promoted alternatives. Alternative technologiesĪdobe’s Flash Player couldn’t keep up with the open standards developed during the mobile era: it decreased performance, battery life, and security of devices, compared to technologies such as HTML5 or WebGL etc. Few websites run on Flash anymore, but there are still games, animations, and other content that haven't found their way to a new platform. However, most popular browsers have gradually dropped support for Flash-based software and websites are now forced to shift their multimedia content to other technologies. Migrating to new software technology is unavoidable to maintain usability, and everything from popular streaming videos to browser game classics are at risk of no longer being playable.įlash’s popularity peaked thanks to its rich media streaming and input options. Millions of web pages have run their content on Flash since its initial release in 1996. This means they will no longer distribute or update the Flash Player plugin. If this is true, then it means that adults are more likely to disrupt the formation of eidetic images and are thus much less likely to be identified as having eidetic imagery, even if they really do possess the ability. So perhaps part of the reason why it is so rare to find older eidetikers is that adults are much more likely than children to try to both verbally and visually encode the picture into memory. This utterance could be something as seemingly innocuous as covertly saying "Saint Bernard" upon seeing a large dog during the initial scanning process. ![]() Research has shown that if a person verbalizes during the time he or she is scanning the original picture, this interferes with eidetic image formation. Why should this be so? No one really knows, although part of the answer may be related to a rather obscure fact about the development of such images. With a few notable exceptions, however, most research has shown that virtually no adults seem to possess the ability to form eidetic images. Although it is certainly controversial, some researchers also believe that eidetic imagery occurs more frequently in certain populations of the mentally retarded (specifically, in individuals whose retardation most likely stems from biological, rather than environmental, causes) and also among geriatric populations. And it is an equal-opportunity phenomenon-there¿s no gender difference in who is likely to be an eidetiker. The prevalence estimates of the ability among preadolescents range from about 2 percent to 10 percent. The vast majority of the people who have been identified as possessing eidetic imagery are children. This suggests that eidetic images are certainly not photographic in nature but instead are reconstructed from memory and can be influenced like other memories (both visual and nonvisual) by cognitive biases and expectations. In fact, besides often being sketchy on some details, it is not unusual for eidetikers to alter visual details and even to invent some that were never in the original. After all, a perfect memory is what is usually implied by the commonly used phrase "photographic memory." As it turns out, however, the accuracy of many eidetic images is far from perfect. You might expect that an individual who claims to still see a picture after it has been removed would be able to have a perfect memory of the original picture. Furthermore, once gone from view, rarely can an eidetic image ever be retrieved. Unlike common visual images created from memory, most eidetic images last between about half a minute to several minutes only, and it is possible to voluntarily destroy an eidetic image forever by the simple act of blinking intentionally. Also, it is not possible to control which parts of an eidetic image fade and which remain visible. Second, a common visual image that we can all create from memory (such as an image of a bedroom) does not have the characteristics of most eidetic images, which almost always fade away involuntarily and part by part. (For example, a flash camera can produce afterimages: the flash is bright white, but the afterimage is a black dot, and the dot moves around every time you move your eyes.) In contrast, a true eidetic image doesn¿t move as you move your eyes, and it is in the same color as the original picture. First, an eidetic image is not simply a long afterimage, since afterimages move around when you move your eyes and are usually a different color than the original image. Consequently, one of the hallmarks of eidetic imagery is that eidetikers use the present tense when answering questions about the missing picture, and they can report in extraordinary detail what it contained.Įidetic images differ from other forms of visual imagery in several important ways. In addition, they can scan it and examine different parts of it just as if the picture were still physically present. People possessing eidetic imagery will confidently claim to still "see" the picture. ![]() After 30 seconds have elapsed, the picture is removed from view, and the person is asked to continue to look at the easel and to report anything that they can observe. In it, an unfamiliar picture is placed on an easel and a person carefully scans the entire scene. The most common way to identify eidetikers (as people with eidetic imagery are often called) is by the Picture Elicitation Method. In the scientific literature, the term eidetic imagery comes closest to what is popularly called photographic memory. Lawrence University and co-author of the college textbook Memory from a Broader Perspective, explains.
